Ask Arren > Updating my rock fireplace
Hi Brenda, Okay, I took a look at the pic on Flickr and yep, I think that fireplace could do with some help! Painting it would be a good solution - Give it as good a clean as you dare and then it would need to be primed with a hardcore stain sealing primer, like Zinsser Bulls Eye 123. As for a paint colour over the top of the primer, well, that's kind of up to your personal style. For a modern feel white would work really well, or for something more traditional I'd look at a warmer neutral that would work with your furnishings. Finally, to make it really pop, you might want to invest in a large scale mirror to hang above the fireplace to help give it some real presence!
Cheers, Arren
Thanks Arren. I already have a huge mirror on the other side of the room. http://www.flickr.com/photos/11601377@N03/4285886429/in/set-72157623114064111/
Do you think a painting would work? Or should I just switch them. Painting on the wall and a new mirror on the fireplace?
What do you suggest?

Hi Arren,
I need help in updating my rock fireplace. As you see in this picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/11601377@N03/4285092787/
it needs some updating. What I like about it: I like the texture and the rustic look it gives in my living room. What I don't like: it looks old and dingy. Can you help me? I am on a limited time and budget, so what I am considering right now is just painting over it. What paint color can I use and can I use latex paint on a wood burning fireplace? Do you have any advice on what else to do with it? Thanks a lot.
Brenda
