Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > Painting Custom Cabinets

Hi Arren,
I desperately need storage in my small entryway. I'm considering using IKEA shelving. And if possible, I'll get them customized with the help of a cabinet maker.
Here's my question: will it look odd to have white IKEA shelves in this space, when the trims and radiator are painted a creamy white (Benjamin Moore's Cloud White)? The walls are a beige colour (Benjamin Moore's Hush).
Thanks so much!
Lei

Hi Lei, Unless you are exceptionally persnickety, white is white is white! Yes, that's a bit of a glib answer, but once the space is filled with coats and shoes I really don't think you're going to see the difference. One option would be to have the shelves faced and to then paint them in the BM Cloud White, but I think you could save yourself the time and energy and try and live with them 'as-is' first.

Cheers, Arren
