Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > 1970s Plastic Basket Chair repair

Hi Arren I have a red and white basket chair from the 1970s (woven with plastic/vinyl reeds) that is in need of
repair. Not an extensive repair just some weaving. Any suggestions of who might be able to do this?
I have emailed some basket weavers and chair caning experts but they only work in natural reeds and don't know
where you could get the supplies of plastic. It is too good of a retro piece to not have repaired. It is similar to an Acapulco Chair. I have a picture of it I could send you if that would help explain the question.
thank you very much Flowers in Toronto.

Flowers! Well, I posted a reply, and it seems to have disappeared in a poof of internet smoke.

Unfortunately I don't really have too brilliant an answer for you on this one. I checked in with the one caner that I know and yep, they only work in natural materials. You might want to try Paul at Innit - the guy behind the Acapulco chair - to see if he might have some suggestions or might be able to supply you with the plastci cording you need. Then, if it's too complicated a weaving job to tackle yourself you might want to get in touch with Tim at Beresford's, he's a furniture restorer and takes on all sorts of interesting projects.

Hope that's a bit of a help!

Cheers, Arren

Can you post or forward me a photo of your chair. I may have the material you are looking for.
