Ask Arren > Paint out Rock Fireplace?

Hi.. found your wonderful site and am immediately "favoriting" it! I love your style-May I link to my blog? Any ways we just bought a new home and the fireplace is hideous-- you can actually see a pic of it on my blog.... http://housefinally.blogspot.com/2009/10/serenity-now-mommys-solution-to-staying.html No mantle, and two 2 ft "strips" of fieldstone on either side of an extended piece of plaster-Drywall w/texture running through the center, floor to ceiling. I don't have the finances right now to completely redo it, but I saw an idea on Velvet and LInen's blog whereby she plastered the rock partially, then painted it white. I also liked your idea, where you painted the rock fireplace white..what do you think? I was thinking of painting the rock part white, leaving the plaster insert, but adding a "floating" mantel of reclaimed wood in a "drift-woody" tone ... also replacing the hearth tiles with something neutral like an ivory travertine.... I like a clean modern look with a little whimsy thrown in. The house is circa 1969 mid-century-ish... Thanks for any ideas you can give me.

Hi Ann, Thanks! I checked the pic and think you have a stunning mid-century fireplace that just needs a bit of an update! Yep, I'd go with paint for sure and paint over the existing fieldstone on either side of your fireplace, whatever your trim colour is would be perfect and I would carry that colour into the plaster panel too. And yes, a simpler cleaner tile or stone for the hearth would help immensely as well. Now, sorry to throw a wrench in, but I'm not sure that you need a mantel. My take would be to hang a large round mirror and be done with it. The look would be cleaner and simpler and more in-keeping with the lovely 1969 vintage of your home.

Cheers, Arren
