Ask Arren > Runner on wedge-shaped stairs???

Hi Arren,

My wooden stairs have 2 pie-shaped steps at the top. I would like to get an oriental runner installed (or maybe even do it myself) but the carpet stores in town are suggesting that it is difficult to fit runners with a pattern to wedge-shaped stairs. One store suggested carpetting the treads only but I'm worried that will look strange.

Any thoughts?

Oooh, Coco, I do hate to nix anyone's grand dreams but yes, if you want everything to be perfectly matched as your runner snakes its way to the top of your stairs you are going to have a problem. Those pie-shaped stairs of yours are the kicker since your runner will have a border and cannot be cut to match and fit between the stairs and risers. An option would be to find a carpet - not a runner - with a small pattern that the feel of the Oriental and then have it cut and bound to fit.

Good luck! Arren
