About

Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > Decoupage Wall Art

Arren - There are instructions on Cityline's website for the tables and pictures mattes that you demonstrated on the Jan. 12 show. However, there are no instructions for the wall art. I believe you did them on canvas??!! Could you please provide the instructions again as I would like to try this for my bathrooms. Love you visits to Cityline. Thanks, Catharina,

Hi Catharina, Hmmm, I don't think I did any work on canvas in that CityLine segment. However, using pre-stretched and primed canvas from an art supply store and using a product like Mod-Podge would totally work. Let me know if that's not the info you were looking for!

Cheers, Arren

Thanks Arren - Now you have me doing a Hmmm!! I was sure you did wall art - was there some other medium you used other than canvas?? What do you mean when referring to 'priming' the canvas. Painting or spray painting the canvas before applying the wallpaper pieces? Any special paint!? Sorry, to be such a pest. I would like to do a proper job since wallpaper and canvas can be a bit costly. Thanks muchly,

Hi Catharina, Here we go! I think the pre-stretched canvas would be the best way to go for a decoupage project. Anything flatter would look a bit less professional, and the canvases are usually available in a couple of thicknesses too (the thicker profile is more modern).

I would check in at a good art supply store and check on their availability of pre-stretched canvases. If your in Toronto my fave place to hit would be Gwatrzmans Art Supplies. They always have a ton of different sizes and shapes of pre-stretched canvas that are really well priced. And yep, they're pre-primed, which means they already have a nice coat of white paint; perfect for you to start out on your art project.

Mod Podge is still your best bet for decoupage. Remember that it comes in a few different finishes, so you can choose between a glossy or satin finish.

Good luck with the project!

Cheers, Arren
