Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > Accent walls

Hi Arren,

Sorry, another question for you. What are your thoughts on accent walls? I was wondering if I painted the wall in my family room that faces the kitcehn (large tall wall with a fireplace) the same colour I paint the kitchen, but the other walls in the family room a shade off. Do people still do this or will it look dated? Should I just paint the room all one colour?

Thanks again!

Hi TP, Here are my thoughts on accent walls - I'm all for playing around with colour and not living by too many rules when it comes to decor, but, in my mind, accent walls work best in spaces that are architecturally quite plain and need to be given that extra bit of interest. A colour change is great for this since it can help bring an area into focus (like your fireplace wall), or even help something you're not too keen on visually recede. In other words, give it a try!

Cheers, Arren
