Ask Arren > painted stair colors

I have stair treads and risers painted gloss white, the same as the trim in the entryway up the stairs. I am about to put a wool oriential stair runner on the stairs that does not have any white. Should the stairs be painted a different color to lessen the contrast between them and the runner or should they remain the same color as the trim?

Lawdy I've taken a while to reply to this question, apologies (I'm currently surrounded in moving boxes and spattered in primer).

Okay Sarah! I think your Oriental wool runner sounds fabulous. From a classic standpoint sticking with your gloss white is just fine, though is it a slightly warm white? If it is, I'd be happier. Now then, if you're a slightly more adventurous Domino mag reading kind of gal I'd suggest painting the stairs in a highlight colour picked from the runner. If your walls are in a neutral and your trim is white, how gorgeous would it be if the stairs were in a gold? For colour ideas check Farrow & Ball paint for rich historical tints that would look just marvy with your Oriental!

Cheers, Arren
