About

Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > Wall Tiles from Cityline

Hi there -

I tuned into an encore presentation of Cityline this morning and you were showing a linoleum type walltile that you can paint or varnish. I loved the idea. What was the company and where can you buy them in Southern Ontario?

Thanks
Vanessa

Hi Vanessa, That product I showed is called Lincrusta - Possibly one of the coolest / wierdest ways to finish a wall or a ceiling that I've seen in a long time; it really is made in pretty much the same way as Linoleum (linseed oil and wood pulp). Lincrusta was first manufatcured in the UK in 1877 and some of the patterns stretch back to the very beginning of the company.

The particular line I showed was available from the Kravet / Lee Jofa showroom in Designer's Walk in Toronto. That means you will have to use a design professional (interior designer, architect, etc.) to purchase it for you. As an alternative, I've done a little research and found another supplier that carries Lincrusta and will deal directly with the public - They're called Steptoe & Wife and are located at 90, Tycos Drive in Toronto. Click here to check them out.

Finally, as a thriftier alternative, check out Graham & Brown for a great selection of paintable embossed wallpaper (they have tons of patterns) that's perhaps easier to come by. Click here to take a look.

Cheers, Arren
