Ask Arren > September 30th Cityline Segment - Kitchen reno

Hi Arren,

I am looking for more info/photos of the kitchen you showed on Cityline on Sept 30th - I am particularly interested in the marble back splash you used. I believe you said they were actual floor threshold pieces but would love more info about this.

Thanks!
Michelle

Hi Michelle, CityLine should be posting the video of the kitchen makeover online, as well as before and after photos, so keep an eye out for that! For the backsplash, this is the deelio -

After much hunting for a cool and unusual backsplash the idea of using marble floor sills as wall tiles was decided upon. The sills were sourced at Lowes in three different sizes - 1.5", 3.25" and 3.75" - and worked for the job because they were actually quite thin.

The sills have a bevel on one edge and, rather than cutting it off with a wet saw (a difficult, expensive and time consuming option), they were set on the wall in a random brick pattern bevel-to-bevel and then grouted. If anything, it adds even more to the texture and the look of the surface.

One important tip that was learnt the hard way - Your wall must be perfectly level to accomodate full length sills, otherwise you'll have to cut them shorter to accomodate any bumps! And finally, make sure the marble is properly sealed once the job is done.

Cheers, Arren
