Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > Front door colour

Hi Arren

Love you work and follow you on CityLine and in the Mags.

We just moved to a new house which is lovely on the inside, but the exterior needs help.
It's a Georgian looking home. Brick is red - but on the orange side of red and the roof is dark brown.
The hardware is all oil-rubbed bronze.
I am thinking of painting alll the trim Farrow and Ball Light Grey - which goes nicely with some of the stone work.
Given the orangey-red brick, trim colour and brown roof, what colour should I do the front door?
I know the simple answer is brown, but I am over brown!

Thanks for your help.

Hi TDB, LOVE your choice of Farrow & Ball's Light Gray for your trim. For your door, hmmm, I'm a big fan of strong, darker colours for a front door that can really create an imposing entrance. How about F&B's Green Smoke, Minster Green or even Olive? I'd paint up a bunch of samples and lay them against your red brick to see which complements, rather than fights, the colour of the brick.

Cheers, Arren

Thank you Arren. You are very kind to answer my question.

I had not thought of any green shades. I think that is a really great idea - as long as the green does not bring out more orange in the brick. Given that they are opposite ends of the colour wheel, do you think that this might happen?

Hey TDB, I checked in with Nikki Chee of Farrow & Ball, while she was over from the UK recently for a preview of some lovely new F&B wallapaper, and we both think that since the green tones I picked out all have lots of depth to them, and are on the greyed-out muddier side of things, that they shouldn't make your bricks look more orange. That being said, as I mentioned before, it's always a good idea to paint up some sample boards before you go and slap any paint on your front door!

Cheers, Arren
