Ask Arren > Living room crisis

Hi Arren,
Let me start off to say that you are truly fantastic at what you do...I hope you can help me out! I recently had a wooden chocolate floor done in my living room, what color of couches, rug , lamps, and curtains should I go for? I was thinking along the colors of either orange or lime green ( for pillows ,rug and acc.) My problem is that I have an electrical fireplace that I think is a little off with the color of my new floors, what can be done with that?
I have a few pics where can I send them so you can get a clearer picture.
thx
Nadia.

Hi Nadia, Thanks for sending the pics through! Yep, your fireplace colour is a little off from your flooring, which has the feel more of a walnut than a chocolate brown finish to my eye, but more on that in a sec!

First off, let's talk furniture - Your sofas and chairs are definitely not working at all, so they'll be the key pieces to work from (especially since they're probably the things that will cost the most in the room) and, since your fireplace is so trad and your tv console so modern, I think we're gonna have to use colour to work this all out.

How about looking at slipcovered sofas and chairs as an option? Take a look at Ikea's Ektorp in either the Svanby Beige or Blekinge White for a more transitional feel, or to go in a modern direction check out Karlstad in the Linneryd Natural or Blekinge White.

With that in mind I would either take a warmer cream tone, or pale beige, and think about painting your fireplace. A rug in a cream wool or a natural sisal would anchor everything really well, and then that would give you the option of bringing in hits of orange and lime green in throw blankets and toss cushions.

How does that sound?

Cheers, Arren

Hi Arren, thx for replying!
I havent done any changes to my living room , was waiting for your ideas! I was actually thinking of buying new sofas, how would sectional ones look in my l.room? So basically, I should go with light colored sofas and rug. Got it.
How does the wall color look to you? Should I change it or keep as is??
As for the pillows and throw blankets ,Yes, the orange or lime will add some color .
One more question, what would you put over the fireplace, a mirror or a picture frame???
Once the whole living room is done i will send you some pictures!!!.
Once again, thank you so much !

Hey Nadia, I think a sectional would work really well for you! Just make sure you plan out the space so it's not too squeezed, and make sure you have room for at least one side table with a table lamp, or a spot for a floor lamp, so you can layer the lighting in the room. For the sofas I wasn't necessarily thinking light, perhaps more neutral in tone, just to give you a cleaner and simpler palette to work with, and one which will definitely work with your existing wall colour.

Oh, and for your fireplace I'd love to see a big mirror up there!

Looking forward to seeing those pictures!

Cheers, Arren

Hey there, thx once again for replying!
I was thinking going for a tweed sectional sofa, I had seen one last month, at a home up north which we had rented for spring break...I totally fell in love with it! Do you have any suggestions where I can find such a sofa here in Montreal??
Can't wait to get this project going!
thx a bunch!
oh, more more thing...what type of frame should the mirror have ???

Hi Nadia, For your sofa/sectional needs you should definitely check out G. Romano, since they're based out of Montreal and have a ton of styles to choose from. Alternatively, since I know they have some styles available in a tweedy fabric, as well as quite a few sectionals, have you checked out Gus*? Then, for the frame on your mirror, I'd think about keeping things lighter and more contempirary in silver. just be sure to pick up on the silver tone either in your accessories or lighting.

Cheers,

Arren
