Hi Ali, Finally! Thanks for the pics, you have a gorgeous space!!! I love the Lee Industries sofa's that you're looking at, they're lovely and strong and simple and look super comfortable. With that in mind, and since they're so large, I'm a bit concerned that if you look at a gray/brown velvet or charcoal flannel that it might be going in too neutral a direction, especially against your gorgeous walnut wall. Is there something a little warmer available? If your heart is set on those colour though I would look at tossing in a bunch of brightly coloured velvet pillows - rather than the pillows the sofa comes with - to really make the sofas work.
Rather than a console under that painting, how about a sideboard instead? Since the wall is so large I really think it needs something weightier to balance everything out, and will give you a great oppurtunity for display. Style wise, I would keep it simple and relatively modern in the same wood colour as your walnut wall. I'd still do a console though, behind the sofa that will be facing the fireplace. You can still pop stools beneath and could even place a pair of table lamps there too, running the cords under the carpet.
Talking of carpet, I would look at something like a wool sisal that can be cut and bound for size for you, and something in a warmer natural tone will look smashing against the velvet you have in mind. With kids and dogs in mind you really do need something that's low-pile and durable. As for size, I would have it sitting at least 18" away from the walls to create the seating area, and to really anchor the space.
An ottoman would be brilliant as a coffee table for you. I would go with something large and tufted in leather in a darker colour, like a warm brown, rather than something tightly upholstered. For a more eclectic feel it could even have turned legs and casters.
Hope this is a bit of a help!
Cheers, Arren

Here is a pic of my family room. Am replacing existing furniture with 2 couches placed L-shaped (Lee Industries 5285-03), large coffee table or ottoman in middle, console under painting with stools tucked underneath for extra seating. Paint colour is Sherwin Williams Worldly Gray. Any ideas for fabric and area rug colours that would work well with the walnut built-ins, paint colour and painting? How much contrast should there be between rug and furniture? Was thinking of a gray-brown velvet??
