About

Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > Chesterfields

I am trying to locate a chesterfield that one might see in a 1930's English movie! A chesterfield with high straight sides and back (high as in head or shoulder height), big square cushions along the back and either a single or double cushion to sit on. most I have seen are upholstered in velvet. I have seen several in old movies and in National Trust properties in England. Any ideas where I might source one in the Toronto area?
Thanks,
Andrea

Hi Andrea, I think you mean this kind of sofa, yes? This one's a whopping $6,000 dollars btw, plus the cost of 18 yards of fabric, and then you'll have to buy it a plane ticket over from the UK!!! Anyways, if you really do fancy a stunner of a sofa like this one I think you'll really have to go custom since I haven't seen a high-sided sofa ever included in anyone's regular line. Best bet would be to ask for recommendations for an upholsterer (I always recommend Mieda Design) and the take along as many photos as you can when you meet up to discuss the project. You'll be deciding all the details, from framing to how the pillows are stuffed, and might also want to consider having the sofa actually made in pieces and then finished on-site - A piece of that size would be very difficult to get through a doorway, let alone up a staircase!

Good luck!

Many small independent upholstery retailers have access to custom upholstery lines that will adjust frames or have in their arsenal a frame that they can customize to fit your needs, this can often be alot cheaper than working with an upholsterer...

Good point LB! Andrea, you'd be looking for a Tuxedo style sofa for the straight lines and then will need to check about customizing it to your needs. I'd check in with Canadian furniture manufacturers like G.Romano or Decor-Rest to see if they can hook you up.
