Back in the bathroom
Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at 02:54PM Hey, I'm finally able to share all the shots by Angus Fergusson (including the spooky before snaps) from that bathroom project I did with Canadian Family mag. It's a pretty sweet makeover and, I hafta say, quite the dramatic change from a bathroom that looked liked something out of the Bates Motel into a bright, glossy and very practical space.
Here are the deets: We re-used the perfectly sized vintage sink (after a very good clean that involved Polident tablets), then changed out all the other fixtures and fittings to pieces from Kohler, including a v. smart WaterSense Escale toilet. We subway tiled from floor to ceiling, and then finished the sloped ceiling in tongue-and-groove, both scored at Home Depot. The floor was penny tiled in marble from Saltillo which, apart from being gorgeous, is nice and safe to walk on with wet feet (and yes, the floor was heated too, with a True Comfort kit from Home Depot). Shelving was added in above the loo, and two marble-lined nooks were added in in the bath area (the surfaces were angled slightly so they drain properly). Finally, the pretty shower curtain was custom made by Tonic Living, and the towels and bath mat were a mix-and-match between Anthropologie and HomeSense. What do you think?

Gorgeous as always Arren. And those certainly are spooky before pics!
Wow - what a beautiful transformation. Love Saltillo tiles - they always have the nicest stuff!
Love this reno Arren. Am working on my own bathroom at the moment and the colour scheme of your tiles used is pretty similar to the onesI've chosen (grey tiles for floor, white Carrara marble tiles with grey for the shower and larger white subway tiles for the wall). I love this scheme but to me there was something missing, now i can see it's colour. And thanks to your design here, I know where to apply it. Beautiful!
Very, very nice. Isn't it amazing how much of a difference you can make without adding square footage?!
I love that bathroom! How did you treat the window in the shower area? I assume that it wasn't in the best shape when you started the reno.
Wow, the results are gorgeous. And I think I recognize those foo dogs!
Ditto all of the above. You are a talented man - great scheme buddy!
my bathroom wishes it was that bathroom. gorgeous!!
Arren, you are so talented! What a great before and after. Love the tongue and groove ceiling and the penny rounds and the fact that you always share your sources.
Love the bathroom! Can you tell me where the shelves are from?
Hi Unknown, The shelves above the toilet were built-in using stock lumber before the tiling was done, then the subway tiles were applied to the walls afterwards.
Nice job on the bathroom. Incredible before and after. Light, bright and airy compared to the yellow fever before.
I love that medicine cabinet. I've been looking for something similar for my pending bathroom reno. What's the source?
Hey Janet, It's the Maax Bath Bevelled Oval Vanity, available through Home Depot in Canada.
Arren,
I love this remodel! Still lovin' those penny rounds.
Love the transformation and LOVE the shower curtain. Tonic Living has the chicest fabrics! All round lovely...wish you could do my bathroom :)
25 years ago, before I moved into my home, a small bathroom reno was done and the window in the tub area was filled in and covered with a tub surround. I really don;t like the "cave" feeling and for my next reno, want to put a window back in. The tub is the only place. From your reno it looks like you left the window in. If that's true, did you retro fit a special kind of window that would not let the water seep down into the walls from the shower?
Hi S. Martin, There was already a window in that spot in the bathroom - an old vinyl slider - so we replaced it for a more energy efficient model. It wasn't a special kind of window (other than applying a frosted vinyl to the glass for privacy), but the contractor did make sure that he used all the correct bathroom appropriate materials, and also made sure the ledge was well sealed and slightly tilted so it would drain easily.
Cheers, Arren
wow incredible transformation love the white subway tiles they brings so much light into the room. They've done an amazing job!
