About

Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Emergency hot fudge sundae

It has been one of those weeks where I've had occasion to have at least one emergency hot fudge sundae. I guess it's part of the fun of working from home, but in just a few minutes I can cobble together hot fudge sauce with a shot of espresso, chocolate chips, and a spoon of peanut butter, all nuked in the microwave. Toss in a healthy scoop of vanilla frozen yogourt and the world is kept at bay until I get to the bottom of the bowl.

One of the things that got me worked up enough for an emergency HFS was the terrible news that Metropolitan Home mag is closing its doors. December will be the last issue. Sheesh. So to take my mind off things I had a poke around PointClickHome, which MH mag shares with Elle Decor, and discovered this cool little makeover. It's Carrie Fisher's dressing room at Studio 54, the nightclub-turned-performance space where she's performing her fantabulous one-woman show Wishful Drinking. Anyways, check out the beastly before, and then see what wonder was wrought by designer John Gidding in what must have been a dizzying 2 weeks. For more, click here for the full story. I love metropolitan Home! :0( I find it a good contrast to Canadian House and Home. That is very sad news.

What is going on in the magazine industry? First Domino and now Metropolitan Home. Is there no money in the design industry? This is obviously also evident in the sudden void in design shows on TV...or is this my imagination?

What an absolutely fabulous and inspirational space. I too was horrified to learn that Metropolitan Home was being shuttered. I'm still not over the shuttering of Domino and have to keep looking at my Domino Book to find comfort and solace. Maybe I need to try one of your emergency hot fudge sundaes!

What horrible news! I just signed up for a 2yr subscription just a month ago (wonder if I'll get my money back...somehow I doubt it). I am in shock. I also get Elle Decor subscription....better keep my fingers crossed!

It's sad that so many design magazines are folding. Some people are wondering if blogs are one of the reasons for the demise of magazines. I hope not -- blogs are great sources of information, but magazines are too. I think they complement each other and there's most definitely room for and a need for both.

On a more positive note, that's one wonderfully colourful and glam dressing room!! :-)

Hey all, Yes, it's terrible news, but one that can be put squarely at the door of the recession and the turndown in advertising. Basic magazine math means that for every page of advertising you get one gorgeous page of editorial. So, whenever the ads start to slip away mags get thinner and sometimes, incredibly sadly, have to close their doors.

All we can all do is hit the newstands, buy a lovely mag (or three) and keep our fingers crossed that our favourite titles will survive!
